Mandrake
Solanacea
Mandragora officinalis
Herbaceous perennial. Direct seed in sunny garden location in early summer, or start in greenhouse in a flat or pot. Keep well watered. This is the true mandrake of English folklore and ancient superstition. The powerfully emetic and purgative root may resemble human form, penetrating several feet into the ground. The large leaves lie close to the ground and emit a foetid odor. Purple-tinged flowers give way to apple-like fruits. The herb is still used in homeopathy, but is dangerous to use in substantive doses. Toxic.
